Photography class (UPDATE)

UPDATE: I was told in my photography class by another student that it is disrespectful to photograph a flag when it is not in full light. I can't find anything to back that up, but if it is I apologize and please know that no disrespect was intended. And if you find something backing that student up, please let me know.

(Handcart photo updated since first posted with bad texture)

I find myself in yet another photography class this semester, and not surprisingly, the only class that helps preserve my sanity. I know some of you don't care, but I also know there are a handful of you out there (5 in particular) who enjoy photography yourself, so I thought I would share some of what I have done for the class. The first picture is of a handcart monument at This is the Place state park. The assignment was to shoot a monument.

This one is a little bizarre and not my favorite. The assignment was mood lighting and framing, and we were shown a couple movies. My inspiration was Nosferatu. (click here to see the trailor). And finally, the flag is my assignment for tomorrow. The assignment has to do with symbolism.

Beautiful!! You guys are all leaving me in the photography dust. Thanks for sharing those. I think Dad will want a copy of the flag photo - and the monument one for me, please.

I think the flag photo looks pretty darn cool. I've never heard anything about it being disrespectful to photograph it in low light, I know there's something about burning one . . . but taking a cool and inspiring photo doesn't seem as bad to me.

Yea, someone is being pretty picky. First of all, the flag is back lit. It's an artistic interpretation and a very beautiful and respectful one. Second, the sun isn't even down yet. A flag is supposed to be either taken down or lit once the sun is down. It's also supposed to be disrespectful to wear any part of the flag - how many people pay any attention to that? Your photo is fine. I think someone was just jealous.

By the way, I did some research on the internet and found, right on the "how to display a flag respectfully" page, a photo of a flag back lit by the sun. And to anyone who has noticed I've now made three comments on this post, just call me "soccer Mom" :)
